Local Market Yurts

If you book a flight to Mongolia, you can visit the local markets and compare pricing.

Generally, pricing for smaller sized gers start at around $1000.

But be warned, most of these yurts don’t come with proper contact, paperwork, certification, and quality assurance.

Depending on the material and processing, and also the country, you may not be able to get it through import customs due to regulations.

But if you know what you are doing and know the local laws, it is doable.

Used Yurts

The cheapest option is to buy a used yurt locally. Depending on the condition, smaller sized yurts cost around $500 in Mongolia (we highly recommend that you don’t try to import used yurts from Mongolia), but yurts that are already imported in countries such as EU or the U.S may cost around $3500, excluding local shipping costs.

Central Asian Yurt Prices

In addition to Mongolian yurts, the fellow cousins of the Mongols, the Kyrgyz and Kazakhs also offer their own unique designs.

Kazakh Yurts Costs

If you specifically want a Kazakh yurt, it would be cost efficient to buy from Kyrgyzstan and request the design to be made in a Kazakh manner, since Kazakhstan mainly imports from Kyrgyzstan.

But if you do decide to buy a yurt from Kazakhstan, generally it’s 4,000,000 Tenge or around $8000-$9000.

Kyrgyz Yurts Costs

Kyrgyz yurts in Kyrgyzstan are significantly cheaper despite being almost identical to Kazakh yurts in design and material.

Prices can range from $2000 – $3000. It’s still slightly more expensive than generic Mongolian yurts.

Glamping Yurt Tent Prices

Another alternative to traditional yurts, glamping tents/yurts might be something up your alley.

  • They are easy to transport
  • Quite luxurious depending on the brand
  • Still provides good homely-natural feel

There are various sizes, but generally it can range from $500 – $1000 based on your selection.

Pacific Yurt Prices

Pacific yurts combine traditional elements with more modern minimalist design. What you get is a cute yurt that blends seamlessly with the nature esque surroundings.

However, they are not the most suitable yurts for mild or colder climates due to limited insulating properties.

A typical Pacific Yurt averages around ~$11,000 and shipping costs varies based on your country. But you can expect to add a few $2,000 – $5,000 more in shipping and packaging costs.

Price For Renting Yurts

Yurt Rentals in Mongolia

If you are renting a yurt in Mongolia, you can expect to pay $50 – $100 per night. Price varies by location and the amenities provided in the yurt.

If you are staying in Terelj Park close to the capital, most likely you will pay $100 or more per night. You could find cheaper options locally if you ask around while you are there instead of booking online via AirBnB or Booking.com

Yurt Rentals Outside Mongolia

It’s significantly more expensive to rent a yurt outside Mongolia due to location and local pricing. You can expect to pay anywhere between $100 – $300 per night to resorts that have a nice landscape.

Yurt Shipping Costs

Our Silk Road Yurts shipping costs vary based on volume.

A single yurt can cost ~3000 euros / ~$3400 to the EU, but a 20-40 feet container can be ~15000 euros / $17000, averaging around $800 – $900 per yurt for shipping.

To the Americas, depending on season and location it can range anywhere between $4000 – $ 6000 for a single set, or a ~$10000 for a full container to a port city, which averages to about $700 – $800 per yurt for shipping in bulk.

Customs Duties, Taxes & VAT

Also please be mindful of customs, duties, and taxes.

Since our Silk Road Yurts are shipped from Mongolia and have special agreement with EU, Customs and Duties are waivered (but generally it’s around 1000 – 1500 euros for a single yurt), thus only VAT needs to be paid. Depending on your country in the EU, VAT is around 18-23%.

So a 3000 euro yurt + 3000 euros in shipping = 6000 euros x 23% = VAT.

Upkeep & Maintenance

For the first 2-3 years, there won’t be much upkeep. Just check for mold and make sure to ventilate.

Starting from the 3rd year, you may need to change the felt, outer canvas cover, etc, which starts at around $500 and onward. Assuming you take good care of your yurt such as ventilating & preventing mold, the wood is still good for another 3-4 years.

The average lifespan of the wood is around 10 years in mild climate, but assuming you live in a dry climate and take good care of your yurt, it can last 15-20 years.

Regular upkeep, such as checking for wear and tear on the fabric, cleaning, and resealing, may cost around $200 to $500 per year.
