Tawas Point State Park is a popular destination offering a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Located on a sand spit along Lake Huron in East Tawas, Michigan, it’s known for its shallow, warm waters and stunning sunsets over Tawas Bay and sunrises over Lake Huron.
Accommodations: The park provides a modern campground with electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Unique lodging options include a yurt and two types of cabins: camper cabins and mini cabins.
- Yurt: This 16-foot diameter structure sleeps up to six people. It is furnished with two sets of bunk beds (two full, two twin), a table and chairs, lighting, a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, and an electric heater. Outside, there’s a deck, picnic table, and fire pit, overlooking a pond.
- Cabins: The accessible cabins feature two bedrooms, a living room, seating, electric outlets, ceiling fans, lights, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and electric heaters. Nearby restrooms with showers and running water are open year-round.
Park Features & Amenities: The park boasts a buoyed beach area, picnic areas, and a nature trail along Lake Huron. A beach house offers restrooms, changing rooms, and food concessions. Other amenities include modern restrooms, a picnic shelter, a playground, and a track chair for accessibility. The sanitation station near the campground entrance has potable water.
Activities: Visitors can enjoy a wide array of activities throughout the seasons:
Birding: The park is a major stopover for hundreds of migrating bird species in spring and fall, making it a favorite spot for birdwatchers and photographers.
Water Activities: Swimming in the warm, shallow waters of Tawas Bay, paddling (kayaking/canoeing), and fishing (perch, walleye, trout, pike, bass, salmon) are popular. Tawas Bay is also renowned for sailing.
Trails: Explore hiking, biking, and snowshoeing on trails like the Tawas Bay Multi-Use Trails, part of Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail.
Lighthouse: The historic Tawas Point Lighthouse, built in 1876, offers tours and panoramic views.
